Dear Friends of the McCombs School:

The 2007-2008 fiscal year has been extraordinary for the McCombs School of Business. Without the investments made by our loyal donors, alumni and corporate partners, our many accomplishments would not have been possible. As a supporter, you contribute to the value of the McCombs School brand in higher education and extend our impact on the community and across the world.

The McCombs School's strengths provide great prospects for the potential of business education. We have undergone a collaborative study with faculty, students, staff and advisory council members to work toward a strategic plan for the future of the McCombs School. I look forward to the possibilities we have as we strive to represent excellence, distinctiveness, integration and community in all that we do.

It is true that Texas is everywhere. From three of our business honors alumnae who are joining forces to create an innovative charter school in the Rio Grande Valley to the Beijing Electric Power Corporation that utilized McCombs custom education programs to help prepare China for the 2008 Summer Olympics, the McCombs School has worldwide reach. As we continue forward, there is a need for our students to be well-versed in technology, culture, languages and other subjects to be successful in business. We are part of a University with many outstanding disciplines, and, as the business school, we see high value in the unique opportunity to collaborate with other colleges across campus to broaden our students' scope of knowledge. This focus will help solidify our reputation as one of the most prominent business schools in the world.

Over the past year we have experienced many successes. The AT&T Executive Education and Conference Center, the finest executive education facility in the country, was completed in August 2008. The AT&T Center will continue to be a key business education resource for years to come. The McCombs Alumni Network expanded to connect the more than 64,000 BBA alumni to McCombs and each other, providing lifelong learning opportunities. We developed a new MBA curriculum that will launch in fall 2009, which offers the opportunity to tailor classes to career aspirations and encompasses program requirements for education surrounding a worldview of business and corporate responsibility.

Overall, my dream is that we become a place for a distinctive business education experience. My role is to facilitate this dream and share with you our vision for the future. I see great opportunity for the McCombs School and I ask that you join us with your continued support as we embark on this journey together.

McCombs in Non-Profits

Raj Gilda, MBA '01, and his wife, Sunanda Mane, grew up in small villages in India where opportunity is as sparse as shade trees and watering holes. It was only through the attention and help of others that they escaped the fate of many rural Indian children and achieved the current level of success they now enjoy. Now they are giving back to provide opportunities for rural children to succeed.

In 2003, with a budget of only $500, Raj and Sunanda launched Lend-A-Hand India (www.lend-a-hand-india.org) to make a difference in the lives of the poor through self-help. Lend-A-Hand anchors young people in their rural communities by providing them with vocational skills, mentoring and small-business bridge loans—not only increasing their job opportunities, but also serving as a catalyst for economic growth outside the cities.

Their most ambitious goal is a project, called PLAN 100, aimed at equipping 20,000 girls and boys from 100 high schools in rural India with job and life skills by the year 2011. So far, Lend-A-Hand India has been able to launch 50 of these multi-skill vocational training centers covering over 8,000 students.

The organization has also reached two other major milestones in the past year: hiring its first two employees in India and disbursing nine enterprise development loans to deserving graduates of its program. Low overhead means that 85 percent of their budget—now $150,000—goes to programs in the field. “Because we depend mostly on volunteers, less than 15 percent of our budget goes to administrative and fund-raising expenses,” Raj points out.

Any business would envy that exponential growth rate, and Raj says he owes a great deal of his success to his business education at the McCombs School.

“Through my experiences at B-school, I learned a lot about how to work with people and how to influence them—the way you deal with people so that they will want to work for you and with you is really important, especially when you're working with volunteers and donors,” he says. The newest Lend-A-Hand resource mobilization/fundraising program is called “Run for a Dream,” where coaching and training is given to people to run marathons; in turn, they raise funds for Lend-A-Hand. In two years, 60 runners have raised more than $100,000. Raj himself ran the New York Marathon in 2008, raising $5,000 for the program. “It's one of the biggest successes we have achieved in terms of grassroots marketing,” he says.

McCombs in Science

Have you ever worn a lucky tie to an important client meeting? Or discovered a stock trend you were certain would keep on rising, only to see it fall?

These seemingly irrational actions may be a result of feeling a lack of control, according to research by Jennifer Whitson, McCombs assistant professor of management, and Adam Galinksy, professor at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. Their findings, which appeared last October in the journal Science, showed that individuals who lacked control were more likely to see images that did not exist, perceive conspiracies and develop superstitions.

“Feelings of control are so important to people that a lack of control is inherently threatening,” Galinsky says. “While some misperceptions can be bad or lead one astray, they're extremely common and most likely satisfy a deep and enduring psychological need.” In situations where one has little control, the researchers proposed that an individual, in seeking to add structure to their world and thus regain their sense of control, may see illusory patterns.

What does this have to do with business? Whitson put it into perspective: “People see false patterns in all types of data, imagining trends in stock markets, seeing faces in static and detecting conspiracies between acquaintances. This suggests that lacking control leads to a visceral need for order, even imaginary order,” she explains. Are other members of the board of directors plotting against you, or are you just feeling a lack of control?

She notes that past research has also shown an increase in superstitious belief during times of economic uncertainty. “People may be more likely to pull their lucky shirt from their closet to wear or avoid stepping on cracks while walking to work,” Whitson says, “and individual investors may be looking more to astrology to determine when to buy and sell. There may even be effects on a national level, with people more likely to see conspiracies behind events such as 9/11 or the bailouts of large corporations.”

The series of six experiments had clear results. Participants who didn't regain feelings of control were more likely to perceive visual images that didn't exist and to perceive conspiracies in innocent situations, while those that were able to regain feelings of control by focusing on important personal values were no different from people who never lost their feelings of self-control in the first place.

“It's exciting—restoring people's sense of control normalized their perception and behavior,” Galinsky says. It seems the research can teach us that when loss of control occurs, finding a way to gain it back could lead us to better decisions in the workplace and beyond.

McCombs in the Rio Grande Valley

Combining their enthusiasm for teaching with their solid business education, three Business Honors alumnae have joined forces to create an innovative charter school for the migrant farm working families of the lower Rio Grande Valley.

The BRIDGE Academy (Building Roads for Individuals Dedicated to Growing Education), will be the first charter school of its kind and aims to dramatically improve the lives of children of migrant workers by providing a stable, challenging and nurturing learning environment to prepare students for higher learning. It will start as a program within an existing school with a large migrant student population with 20 students and grow each year as new grade levels are added. Once the program has proved to be successful, BRIDGE will expand to a network of charter schools in South Texas and eventually the nation.

The trio, Marialena Rivera (BHP '07), Pegah Javidpour (BHP '07) and Sarina Hickey (BHP '07), achieved an important first step in this journey back in May 2007, when they won $10,000 from the Social Entrepreneurship Competition hosted by the LBJ School of Public Affairs' RGK Center for Philanthropy and Community Service. The alumnae first came up with the idea for the charter school when they heard about the RGK competition. They knew they wanted to do something in education and knew that the program was something they could work on more once they gained experience in the classroom with Teach for America (which Marialena and Pegah would go on to do after graduation). With several grandparents that were migrant workers, Marialena knew that children of migrant farm workers typically join their families in the fields at age six or seven and move at least twice a year, interrupting their school year.

To help provide consistency to these students, the school will have a unique tracking system to ensure that BRIDGE Academy teachers are aware of students' progress and an innovative three-tiered rotational teaching plan to keep students with the same teachers for three years in a row.

In February, Marialena, currently a Teach for America math and social studies teacher in the Bronx about to embark on a Masters in Public Policy at UC Berkeley, and Pegah, who teaches at KIPP Academy Middle School in Houston through Teach for America, attended the Clinton Global Initiative Conference to meet with other philanthropists dedicated to making the world a better place. When Bill Clinton announced their commitment to action onstage and gave his support, the two felt even more dedicated to making sure their school becomes a reality.

McCombs in Non-Business Majors

In the summer of 2008, 35 students from across the university immersed themselves in business studies thanks to the generous support of Halliburton.

In response to the need to develop well-rounded leaders in the areas of engineering and geosciences, Halliburton awarded the McCombs School a $250,000 grant to develop and launch the “Halliburton Summer Business Foundations Institute.” This nine-week summer intensive version of the Business Foundations Program, which is available to all non-business majors year round, targets engineering, geosciences, liberal arts and economics majors and offers students the opportunity to build critical foundations in business while earning a business minor and Business Foundations Certificate. We are pleased to announce that Halliburton has renewed their support through the 2010-2011 academic year.

In addition to enjoying small classes, students work in teams, give presentations, compete in challenges and gain leadership training. “I didn't realize that there were so many different components to business,” said Ashley Pietzch, an architectural engineering student. “Having a background in business will definitely help me in the future.”

Faculty members have also praised the program. “We've had a great collection of students from engineering, science, architecture, pharmacy, fine arts, liberal arts, communications and education,” said Regina Hughes, senior finance lecturer and director of BFP. “With that diversity, presentations became works of art, with students adding their own special touch.”

McCombs in Beijing

When Beijing Electric Power Corporation, the utility company in charge of Beijing's main power grid, gained independence from the Chinese government in 2003 and faced competition for the first time, the company knew it had some learning to do. So it turned to the McCombs School's custom executive education program.

Over the course of two years, faculty worked with a team of marketers and customer service managers from Beijing Electric as they prepared for the impending increased demand during the 2008 Summer Olympics. “They needed to modernize their practices, improve customer service and establish a public relations office,” says Chantal Delys, assistant dean of executive education. Through the custom program, they were able to reach these three goals prior to the start of the games.

“McCombs program designers know exactly what questions to ask to ensure that the program was aligned correctly with the company,” says Delys. “We know there was a lot at stake and it showed.”

The McCombs School is among the most sought-after providers of custom executive education programs in the United States. According to Delys, the school must understand how to develop programs that meet very specific goals.

“That means there's a lot of up-front work with the company, assessing its needs and coming to understand its perspective,” she says. Second, professors need to anticipate and prepare for the fast-moving, high-level discussions that occur in a classroom full of managers and executives—discussions that are steps above what might occur in an MBA classroom. And finally, professors need to put more emphasis on practice, as opposed to theory.

McCombs in Kenya

When he wrote on his application to the full-time Texas MBA program that his professional goal was to develop skills that would allow him to help nonprofit organizations improve their business processes, Nirav Desai, MBA '09, wasn't joking.

In his second year at McCombs, Nirav enrolled in Professor Jeffrey Martin's Entrepreneurial Management class, which involved working in a team on a tactical project for an entrepreneur. For Nirav, it was an opportunity to fulfill a long-term professional goal. He reached out to the Caroline Wambui Mungai Foundation (CWMF), a nonprofit with an orphanage home in Wangige, Kenya. Along with Hiroyasu Ata, MBA '09, Hitoshi Emura, MBA '09 and accounting student James Chen, Nirav spent the semester figuring out how to improve CWMF's Web site.

The team proposed ways to make the site more engaging by adding content, videos and pictures, and facilitating online donations using PayPal. They also suggested partnering with corporations that have both a track record of supporting socially responsible initiatives and a presence in Kenya to increase the credibility of CWMF and ask for donations of food, school supplies, shoes and other needed items.

Nirav also drew ideas from Professor Andrew Whinston's “Introduction to E-Commerce” course and encouraged CWMF to get involved with social networking sites such as Facebook to generate awareness in a cost-effective manner.

But the most rewarding part of the project for Nirav came when he spent two weeks volunteering at the orphanage home in Kenya. Through donations from classmates, he arrived armed with soccer balls, candy, pencils and socks, which delighted the children.

Nirav also took the opportunity to help the co-founder formalize and streamline the bookkeeping processes, which led to an idea to help the orphanage attract additional volunteers and revenues. The idea was to partner with a safari agency to give volunteers the opportunity to enjoy a popular tourist activity while they were in Kenya working with the orphanage. In return, the safari agency will promote CWMF to tourists.

“It was an extremely rewarding experience for me for numerous reasons,” Nirav says of his work with CWMF. “When I decided to get an MBA, I did so for reasons that pertained to my own benefit—to further my career, improve my standard of living, make friends and gain skills that would help me achieve my goals. But as school progressed, I felt as though the things I was learning could be extended to impact an area larger than just myself. I can safely say now that a Texas MBA is more than just a degree—it is a lifetime experience.”

Achievements

The commencement of the Class of 2008 was celebrated at the first annual McCombs Senior Sendoff, where the McCombs Alumni Network welcomed new graduates.
Texas Accounting programs have been ranked No. 1 for 14 years in a row, as reported by Public Accounting Report's survey of accounting professors across the country.
Texas Executive Education offered an innovative Energy Finance Certificate program at its Federal Reserve Bank campus in Houston beginning in fall 2007.
The McCombs School of Business Hall of Fame inducted four prominent leaders Oct. 26, 2007 at a ceremony at the Driskill Hotel. The honorees were Frederick B. Hegi Jr., William R. Johnson, Red McCombs and W.A. “Tex” Moncrief Jr.
Shell Oil Company contributed $225,500 to support academic programs at UT Austin. The grant benefited both undergraduates and graduate students in the University's McCombs School of Business, Cockrell School of Engineering, Jackson School of Geosciences and College of Natural Sciences.
Michael Crawley, an accounting doctoral candidate at McCombs, was named one of the 10 scholars nationwide to receive the Deloitte Foundation's 2008 Doctoral Fellowship Program grant.
Accounting Professor Steve Kachelmeier was named the senior editor of the Accounting Review and assumed his role in spring 2008. In his career, Kachelmeier has investigated a wide variety of issues involving auditing, financial reporting, international accounting, management accounting and taxation.
In the third annual BusinessWeek magazine survey of top undergraduate business programs, the McCombs School of Business ranked No. 10 overall out of 96 schools surveyed nationally. The ranking places the school's program No. 3 among public schools and No. 1 among public schools with four-year programs.
In Hispanic Business magazine's annual Top 10 Best Business Schools for Hispanics, the Texas MBA program was ranked No. 2.
First-year MBA students took first place at the University of North Carolina Real Estate Development Challenge in Chapel Hill in spring 2008. The team went on to win first place at the third-annual NAIOP “Texas Shoot-Out.”
McCombs ranked No. 9 in the University of Texas at Dallas Top 100 Business School Research Rankings, which tracks faculty publications in 24 leading business journals across major business disciplines over a five-year period.
Robert Prentice, business law professor, received the Investment Management Consultants Association's 2008 Richard Davis Ethics Award for his paper, “Ethical Decision Making: More Needed Than Good Intentions,” which appeared in Financial Analysts Journal.
The Accounting Practicum course, Federal Taxation of Low Income Filers: Socio-Economic Forces, received the OneStar Foundation Governor's Volunteer Award. Since the course was created in 2005, more than 400 students have prepared income tax forms for thousands of working poor families through Foundation Communities' Community Tax Centers programs.

Endowments are the primary means by which The University of Texas establishes long-term support for students, faculty and programs. Endowments established during the 2007-2008 fiscal year include:

Endowed Excellence Funds

Robert K. Conklin Endowed Excellence Fund in Business: Donor: Mr. Robert K. Conklin; Supports faculty, students and programs of the McCombs School of Business.
Robert and Marcy Duncan Family Endowed Excellence Fund in Business: Donors: Mr. and Mrs. Robert D. Duncan; Supports faculty, students and programs of the McCombs School of Business.

Endowed Scholarships

Fred and Jann Curry Endowed Scholarship Fund: Donors: Mr. and Mrs. Fred J. Curry, Jr.; Provides scholarship assistance to undergraduates, graduates, and doctoral students of any academic major enrolled or planning to enroll in the McCombs School of Business.
Nick Finnegan Memorial Scholarship Endowment: Donors: Mr. and Mrs. William N. Finnegan IV; Provides scholarship support for Texas undergraduate, graduate, and/or doctoral students of any academic major enrolled in the McCombs School of Business, with demonstrated strong academic performance or financial need.
Robert S. Harvill, Jr. Endowed Scholarship: Donors: Mr. and Mrs. Patrick M. Harvill; Provides undergraduate scholarship support for students enrolled in the McCombs School of Business with preference given first to students from Montgomery County, Texas; second to those who are on the real estate track; and third to those who are in the Department of Finance.
Hilary and Scott Hill Endowed Presidential Scholarship: Donors: Mr. and Mrs. Scott A. Hill; Provides scholarship support for undergraduate students of any academic major who are enrolled full-time in the McCombs School of Business, with preference given to academic merit.
Linda and Andy Kerner Endowed Scholarship: Donors: Mr. and Mrs. J. Andrew Kerner; Provides scholarship support for undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students of any academic major enrolled in the McCombs School of Business, with preference given to academic merit.
Thomas C. Mays III Endowed Scholarship: Donor: Mr. Thomas C. Mays III; Provides scholarship support for undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students of any academic major enrolled in the McCombs School of Business, with preference given to academic merit.
Matthew Olim Endowed Scholarship: Donor: Mr. Matthew B. Olim; Provides scholarship support for undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students of any academic major enrolled in the McCombs School of Business, with preference given to academic merit.
Charles L. Sandahl Jr. Endowed Scholarship for Physically Disabled Students in Business: Donors: Mrs. Irene H. Sandahl, Reverend Scott D. Sandahl, and the Weir Foundation; Provides scholarship support to physically disabled Texas residents with financial need, with preference for continuing awards, as long as progress toward a degree is shown in the McCombs School of Business.
Irene Hoke Sandahl Endowed Scholarship for Physically Disabled Students in Business: Donors: Mrs. Irene H. Sandahl, Reverend Scott D. Sandahl, and the Weir Foundation; To award need based scholarships to physically disabled Texas residents in the McCombs School of Business.
Virginia Maloney Walker Endowed Scholarship: Donor: Mrs. Virginia M. Walker; Provides scholarship support for undergraduate students with a major in marketing and who are enrolled full-time in the McCombs School of Business, with preference given to academic merit.
