 Title:

Go have fun to work harder!: the role of incidental emotion on motivation in goal pursuit

Special:

We only need an internet access

Description:

In this research, we will look at the role of incidental moods on people’s motivation based on the previous literature on the function of positive mood and negative mood. We expect that the role of incidental moods will interact with people’s mood state after they receive feedback on their progress level on the goal. Let’s assume that you are learning the second language with language learning software. After you worked on the first session (e.g., basic words and pronunciation for example), you make take a test and receive feedback on how well you did in the first session. But before starting the first session, you may have set up the subgoal that you would achieve at least 60% (out of 100) in the test for the first session. Depending on your score (i.e., feedback), you will feel negative vs. positive mood and may lose your concentration on the test. Existing literature will tell you that in such situations you need to focus on what you have done so far to stay in a high motivation, if you’ve just started using the product, and if you are at the advanced stage, you need to pay attention to how much left ahead in order to complete this goal to motivate yourself. However, in this study, we aim to find a way to boost up people’s motivation towards the goal by leading them to detach from the goal context and to experience the right type of incidental mood while being away from pursing the goal.

Card Sorting

Special:

Same lab setup as 4/10/2012 and June 2012 and Feb. 2013

Description:

The objective of this study is to test how construal level affects individuals attitudes and behaviors and creativity and performance in diverse workgroups. In dyads, we manipulate construal level (high versus low) and examine if high construal level can overcome the negative effects of diversity in workgroups.

We need lab facilities to allow dyads and/or groups of participants to interact on a card sequencing performance task.

Change Oriented Behaviors

Special:

Computers will need internet access. Will need three video recorders in the large conference room. Will use three "closet" areas with dividers between them.

Description:

This research looks at group interactions. I require the lab computers to record survey responses prior to and after group interactions. I also need the lab space for the group interactions and the lab video cameras to record these interactions. Finally, I need both the work station room and the large conference room because one third of the participants will be joining their groups as "newcomers" and will need to wait in another room until they can join their groups.
