- During the Turkey portion of our trip, we were able to see many cultural and historical landmarks including the Hagia Sophia which is in the attachment. I think this was my favorite part of the trip to Turkey. This landmark was once a Catholic church that was converted into a mosque (now a museum). There are still remnants of the Catholic church found throughout the building including the original mosaic panel of Judgement Day showing Jesus Christ enthroned between the Virgin Mary and St. John the Baptist from the 12th century.

- We ended our global trip by going back to Istanbul and it paid off because the weather, and views, were amazing compared to our first trip to the city. This picture captures the city view covering both the Asian and European continents. As expansive as the view seems, this only captures a small portion of the 17MM population living in Istanbul.

- It was nice to finally take a moment on the streets of Istanbul and start seeing life through the eyes of a young Turkish girl. It doesn't matter what part of the world you grew up in but the excitement of feeding the birds on an afternoon with your grandfather is something sacred no matter what country you are in. This little girl reminded me just that, how similar we truly are!

- Elephants have to eat most of the day to sustain their nutritional needs. They travel large distances every day in search of vegetation and water. We saw this elephant taking his food to-go as he crossed in front of our jeep!

- It was very interesting to witness the rate at which China is expanding. The Sears Tower is the tallest building in America and it was built before most McCombs students were born (1973); we used to be head and shoulders ahead of the rest of the world in almost every measurable way but the rest of the world is catching up fast and has passed us in many respects. The World Financial Center was declared the highest observatory in the world upon its completion in 2009, and it will soon be dwarfed by the Shanghai Tower which is currently under construction across the street.

The Great wall was certainly one of the highlights of the trip, everyone’s expectations were met or exceeded. It is hard to comprehend just how small of a portion of the wall we actually saw, it stretches on for over 3,000 miles (easily long enough to reach from New York to LA!)

- In 2009, over 60% of all of the cranes in the entire world were in UAE, due to the huge amount of construction taking place in the country. Most of these cranes are being used to construct massive buildings (Burj) in Dubai, many along this stretch of Sheikh Zayed Road, which is also known as “Manhattan, Dubai”.

- While travelling in both Istanbul and UAE, we had to get used to the call to prayer which took place five times a day. To enter the mosque, everyone had to first remove their shoes, and all women had to be properly covered. Believe it or not, these lovely ladies were in fact McCombs students visiting the mosque, not Muslims fulfilling their religious duty.

- The area around the Google sign was very slick due to the snow, and everyone had already slipped on it at least once. - Patrick, Jeff, Adam, Shelli and I took an overnight train from Xi’an to Qufu City, where we visited the Temple of Confucius. From there, we travelled to Taishan where we took a cable car to the top of the mountain. We stayed overnight in a hotel with no water or heat (but free internet!) The following morning, the cable car was not running due to a sandstorm in the mountains. We hiked down the 6,000 steps and bought “lucky red ties” from a vendor that we passed en route.
