On the Train en Route from Delhi to Agra, India
    Description
Everyone was so engrossed in reading their newspapers, books, and Kindles on our train ride from Delhi to Agra to see the Taj Mahal. But from my perspective, I only saw one thing: a tempting game of "Whack-A-Mole". For anyone who ever went to the playpace "Chuck E. Cheese's" growing up, you may know what I'm talking about --- a fun, but challenging, game where you repetitively whack moles that pop up out of the ground.

    Bird Market of Hong Kong
    Description
In such a vibrant, bustling city it was fascinating to step back in time in the bird, flower, and fish markets. We saw dozens of birds crammed into one cage, hundreds of fish in one aquarium, and the workers strongly discouraged photos. It was clear that what they were doing was illegal in a lot of ways. The juxtaposition of the immense wealth on the other side of the river in downtown Hong Kong versus the dirty markets in Kow Loon showed that China is still holding onto tradition and exploring ways to make money in the oddest of places.

    Description
China was an incredible trip! Beyond the opportunity to travel with such a fabulous group of people, the experience made real what I’ve only read about regarding Chinese traditions and government practices. We saw censorship in action and the business mindset of being first to market. Visiting sites such as the Confucius Temple, Great Wall, and Forbidden City provided a rich cultural experience beyond the factories and businesses of modern-day China.

    Description
In Beijing, everywhere we went, and especially in the Imperial Palace/Forbidden City, we felt like fish in a fishbowl because we were constantly being taken pictures of or asked to be in a photo with. People were sneaking photos of us with their cell phones even and at times we would pause and pose for them. They laughed, we laughed. But we were just as mesmerized by them, and particular with one aspect of child raising: the bottomless pant. We didn't understand it and found it to be so strange. Apparently this is the old-fashioned approach to potty training. Our tour guide started to explain it one day but I was so shocked that I do not recall the reason why. Obviously we didn't want to be rude and take a blatant photo, but I happened to capture this family walking in front of me in the Forbidden City.

    Description
Our bus was stuck in traffic in Hangzhou, a small city full of picturesque lakes, flowers and trees that Chinese vacation in. I was staring out the window and was struck by how mesmerized these two Chinese kids were by the balloons they were playing with. It made me remember how I could play for hours with something as simple as even a cardboard box. The youth all over the world remind us about how fortunate we are to have what we do (many Chinese cannot even afford to vacation in Hangzhou let alone me traveling halfway around the world to visit) and a reminder to appreciate the smaller things in life.

We visited the school where Lend-A-Hand runs one of its programs and watched demonstrations of what the students have learned. Raj accompanied us to explain the model of the NGO, and his parents came... His parents know about his NGO but had never had the opportunity to visit one of his sites. It was inspiring to see how proud they were of him. They had not been told, however, that Raj recently quit his job as a VP at Citibank to work full-time on this NGO venture. He's the only male lion in a 30,000 acre reserve, and often trackers will go for 2-3 days without spotting him, until we heard him roar less than 2 km away. We quickly drove in that direction, and after waiting and tracking him for over 30 more minutes, we heard him roar less than 20 yards away! With the night now set in, the lion then slowly sauntered out to our jeep, announced his presence, and rested 20 feet away. We had found him - this was a truly awesome experience.

I and was mesmerized by the ferocious pace of several people working to peel cane, put it through a press, and serve their customers who were waiting impatiently--I wish I would have been able to try some but anything like that is off limits for tourists who don't want to chance getting sick!
