About Us

SEMA is a registered student organization committed to leveraging the graduate school experience into satisfying careers in Sports, Entertainment, and Media Management.

Our Goals

1. Provide formal and informal learning opportunities in Sports and Entertainment Management

2. Initiate and maintain a strong network of contacts to help the Sports and Entertainment Management Association survive and succeed

3. Provide career opportunities for Sports, Entertainment, & Media Association members

What We Do

SEMA's function can best be divided into three equally important areas: Education, Career Resources and Opportunities, and Speakers and Events.

Education

First and foremost, it is SEMA's objective to enhance the McCombs School of Business' educational opportunities for graduate students in the areas of Sports and Entertainment Management. Realizing this is a current deficiency within the MSB:

  • We are currently opening working relationships with other graduate programs across the University
  • We are discovering business-relevant graduate courses across the University
  • We are approaching other graduate student associations for opportunities to partner and increase graduate student interest in sports and entertainment management

With with those relationships and resources, SEMA will increase the formal learning opportunities for sports and entertainment management by working with appropriate departmental faculty within the MSB to develop learning options. Goals include cross-listing business-relevant graduate courses and creating a Management concentration in Sports and Entertainment Management.

Career Resources and Opportunities

Finding a fulfilling career in Sports or Entertainment Management that fits a graduate student's skill set is not easy. More than other industries, sports and entertainment hiring is very experience-based, the channels of employment information are non-standard, and the available jobs are highly desired. That scares away many graduate students and career service professionals. BUT, as they say, "FIND A JOB YOU LOVE, AND IT WON'T FEEL LIKE A JOB." Many of us love sports, film, music, TV, or interactive media, and the good news is...there are important business aspects to each. With the exponentially increasing ways people can receive sports and entertainment in the digital world, opportunities abound in the fields we love.

"At the heart of our association's efforts is our desire to leverage the graduate school experience into satisfying careers in sports and entertainment management."

SEMA is working with Ford Career Center to assist the career search. We conduct surveys of current SEMA members to determine specific company interests and work with the Career Center counselors to make contact with those companies to either get them to campus or arrange for a communication link between them and SEMA.  Additionally, a SEMA resume book is made available to companies in the sports, entertainment, and media industries.

Speakers and Events

As with any student association, SEMA will succeed or fail based on our ability to keep things interesting and relevant to our members. We intend to attract and keep a critical mass with fun, productive meetings, valuable speaker-led discussions, and successful SEMA-sponsored events.

SEMA has high hopes of attracting the types of speakers that our members and others at McCombs would have found inaccessible otherwise. They include:

  • College Athletic Directors
  • Hollywood Producers
  • Sports Team Owners and General Managers
  • Museum Curators and Performance Arts Directors
  • Sports and Entertainment Agents
  • Software Game Developers

Some of the highlights of joining our organization include the opportunity for networking, sharing our experiences and attending SEMA-sponsored sporting and cultural events together. Even beyond those perks will be our ability to tour facilities or sets and gain a behind-the-scenes feel for the business of sports and entertainment.
