Who We Are:

To make the University of Texas McCombs School of Business the premier learning destination for graduate students pursuing careers in the business aspects of Sports and Entertainment.

What We Do:

SEMA's function can best be divided into three equally important areas: education, career opportunities, and special events.

Education

First and foremost, it is SEMA's objective to enhance the educational opportunities for graduate students in the areas of sports, entertainment and media management.

• We have working relationships with other graduate programs across the University, particularly the departments of Radio, Television, and Film (RTF), the School of Law, the College of Communications and the School of Fine Arts.

• We have identified business-relevant graduate courses across the University and are working to develop future practicums, independent studies, and Plus Projects to give students an opportunity to gain hands on experience working with real industry clients and companies.

• We have partnered with other student organizations to increase interest and create learning opportunities through co-sponsored events for students interested in working in the sports, entertainment and media industries.

• SEMA plans to sponsor the Texas Plus Film Academy for the 2003-2004 school year.

SEMA’s goal is to increase the formal learning opportunities for people interested in entering the sports entertainment and media industry upon graduation. We plan to create a management concentration in Entertainment by 2004.

Career Resources and Opportunities

Finding a fulfilling management career in sports, entertainment and media is not easy. More than other industries, sports and entertainment hiring is very experience-based, the channels of employment information are non-standard, and the available jobs are highly desired. That scares away many graduate students and career service professionals.

BUT, as they say, "FIND A JOB YOU LOVE, AND IT WON'T FEEL LIKE A JOB." Many of us love sports, film, music, TV, music or interactive media, and the good news is...there are important business aspects to each niche. At the heart of our association's efforts is our desire to leverage the graduate school experience into satisfying management careers in sports and entertainment and media.

SEMA has many resources to assist our members in their career search. We send out weekly newsletters with internship and job offers, latest news articles, and invitations to local film screenings, concerts, etc. SEMA also hosts an online Career Center which offers SEMA-sponsored employment opportunities at specific sports and entertainment organizations, an extensive list of sports entertainment and media related websites, company profiles, latest articles from industry trade magazines and other business resources. We are currently working with the Chamber of Commerce to develop a plan to connect local film and digital companies with MBA students interested in consulting and internship opportunities.
