University of New South Wales, Fall 2011 | Sydney, Australia

Hannah Hutyra

"One of my 'mates' took this photo of me while I was in Jervis Bay, on a trip that wasn't necessarily on my to-do list when I landed in Oz. When you think about studying in Sydney, you think of the Opera House, surfing, and being at the beach. Although I definitely was involved in these things, taking a trip with my Australian Aboriginal Studies class for a weekend was truly one of my most memorable experiences while in Australia. 'Just rest your feet on the ground and take a deep breath,' a quote said by one of the Aboriginal tribe elders, is one that will make an impact on me for the rest of my life. A new chapter of mine started that weekend, and I became even more connected to who I am and where I come from. After all, what starts here changes the world."

"For our school's orientation we were led through the heart of down town Sydney and taken to some of the most famous landmarks. At this stop we ascended to the top of the Rooftop Bar in Darling Harbor. From there we had an unreal view of the sunset as it came down on the Sydney Opera House."

"Going to Chile was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I fell in love with a country and a culture like something I've never experienced during my travels before. This picture was taken at the Tatio Geysers in the Atacama Desert in Northern Chile, the driest desert in the world. Waking up at 4am to leave our hostel in the tiny town of San Pedro (the only pueblo in the middle of the desert for miles and miles), we arrived to -14C at the Tatio Geysers where natural hotsprings blew steam into the freezing air as the sun rose over the Andes mountain range."

"While most people went to the beaches for summer break, I decided to spend about two weeks in New Zealand after the semester ended. And I certainly don't regret my choice! New Zealand is even more beautiful than everyone says it is - everywhere you looked was picture perfect scenery! By sharing this photo, I hope I've shared a bit of New Zealand's beauty with everyone! "Four hours before the flight, we decided a spontaneous weekend trip to the Philippines. With no hostel reservations, plans, or Internet, we serendipitously ran into some random students who acted as our guides. Nonetheless, the tigers, typhoons, and potentially missed flight home were all an unforgettable adventure."

Cinque Terre, Italy

By Adriana Elizondo

Universidad Pontificia Comillas, Fall 2011 | Madrid, Spain

"Waking up to the beautiful view of countless vineyards, one of five gorgeous towns on hills, and the endless clear, blue sea will always be in my heart. Cinque Terre is one of those amazing places that no matter what angle you take a picture from, it looks like a postcard. Eating freshly caught fish, drinking homemade Limoncello, and walking the Via dell Amore was amazing. By far, the most memorable part of this trip was sailing into the middle of the sea where Cinque Terre was almost invisible, diving into the clear ocean, and seeing all the colorful fish swim past me. This is a memory I will never forget."

"Going to Queensland, Australia for my mid-semester break was an awesome decision. I was able to experience bushwalking through the rainforest, SCUBA diving in the Great Barrier Reef, and to top off my visit, I impulsively decided to go Bungy Jumping. This has to be one of the toughest things I have ever done. Deciding to jump off of a 50 meter ledge, just thinking about it still gives me the chills."

"While I was in Southeast Asia I climbed mountains, I scaled volcanoes, I saw ancient temples, and I learned more about my place in the world than I ever thought possible, and I did it all alongside a group of some of the most amazing people I have ever met. I made friends from countless nationalities, races, and cultures, and on some rare occasions I even got to make friends with different species as well. This baby monkey may not have been the most talkative creature I met in Southeast Asia, but sitting there nibbling on that banana, he definitely was the cutest."

Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Fall 2011 | Santiago, Chile

Ben Pyne

"After flying alone to the most remote island on earth, my instant islander friend Rosita helped me rent a [fast] four-wheeler for $30 a day and find a place to sleep. I spent days exploring the tiny island's coastline, volcanoes, and ancient quarries surrounded by Moai (the ancient heads behind the rooster) on my ATV and by horseback. As I sat down for lunch one day at the empty Ahu Tongariki on the coast, this little rooster friend decided to hang out with me in typical random South American fashion. Seven months in Chile, Ecuador, Argentina, and Uruguay was 'just delightful."

Tangariro National Park, New Zealand

By Matthew Knight

University of Otago, Fall 2011 | Dunedin, New Zealand

Matt Knight

"Studying abroad in New Zealand made it difficult to choose just one photo for this contest. Every place I went was the next "most beautiful place I had ever seen". This picture was taken about half way through an eight hour hike through Tongariro National Park on the north island of New Zealand. The "Tongariro Alpine Crossing" is rated as THE best one day hike in the world...and there's nothing for me to argue there. The mountain in the background is Mt. Ngaruhoe, but most people know it better as Mt. Doom from the Lord of the Rings series. Hiking up, down, and through the peaks of three mountains on this gorgeous day was one of the highlights of my study abroad experience, the views were absolutely amazing. And of course...I rep the horns wherever I go."

Jose Bustos

"I studied abroad in Barcelona, Spain in the fall of 2011. I knew my first stop in Europe had to be the Greek Islands. Ios Island was an unforgettable adventure and this was one of the many amazing views I had the opportunity to experience. After a long day on the road, a peaceful sunset was very much needed. Every now and then I look back at this picture and makes me forget about all my problems in the world."

"This was definitely my most favorite and final trip in Korea. I got to spend an unforgettable time with some of my loved ones while learning how to snowboard for the first time! It was just like my experience here. I fell a LOT but after I got the hang of it, I would NEVER go back to skiing (: boarding all the way! Just like studying abroad was an experience I will NEVER forget.
